Version 1 hosts Public Sector Seminar

    17 September 2008

Held in the Shelbourne Hotel, the half-day seminar entitled ‘Practical Actions for Stressed IT Budgets’ offered  Public Sector IT Managers  practical advice on managing IT budgets.

Speakers from Version 1 offered expert advice on how Public Sector IT Managers could stretch funds to cope with the distinct tightening in public sector budgets. Ten key ways to achieve better value from IT budgets were highlighted by the speakers over the course of the session. These practical suggestions covered areas such as reviewing support and maintenance contracts, using Microsoft SharePoint 2007 for more rapid application deployment, putting software asset management in place as a Managed Service and exploring virtualisation as an alternative to investment in large capital investment projects. A number of ‘gotchas’ were identified that can cause organisations to incur unnecessary costs. These included not being licence compliant, assuming that everything that is virtualisable should be virtualised and neglecting to properly plan and architect the use of SharePoint across an organisation.

Three Public Sector IT Directors talked about how they are coping with the current budgetary pressures and shared strategies for gaining maximum performance and efficiency from IT investment. Cornwell Consultants’ David Hickey offered tips on achieving a more efficient procurement process and guest lunchtime speaker, former Government Minister and entrepreneur Ivan Yates, entertained with a discussion of his political and business philosophies and his experiences of the public sector in Ireland.
