Airtricity:
Windfarm Trading and Forecasting System
Challenge
Airtricity required a system to support the launch of the Braes of Doune Windfarm, to provide support for core business functions of forecasting and trading, and to provide an extensible platform on which to build the company’s growing portfolio across different energy markets.
Solution
Version 1 won a competitive procurement process to provide the Windfarm Forecasting and Trading system which would integrate data from disparate systems and provide a central data repository. The solution utilises PHP and Oracle integration technology - Enterprise Service Bus – which provides out-of-the-box support for the integration of multiple databases and external feeds. The application comprises mathematical modelling and graphing components and integrates multiple third-party feeds, such as Garrad Hassan meteorological forecasts and satellite data.
Benefit
We deployed a reliable, robust and resilient solution which supports the core business functions of forecasting and trading. By combining weather projections with a complex risk/reward analysis, the system manages uncertainty for Airtricity by generating production forecasts, helping the company maximise revenue from its windfarms. The system also facilitates contract management, with support for any type of offtaker contract and multiple trading deadlines and delivery methods. With built-in reporting, Airtricity can validate invoices for generated output against real windfarm and system operator data ensuring accurate and speedy invoicing.
