Nikki joined Version 1 through our Accelerate programme in our most recent intake of graduates. She discusses why she chose to start her Cloud career with Version 1 and what makes the Accelerate programme so unique.
How did you end up joining Version 1?
I studied Science for my BA and when I finished I took time out for some traveling in New Zealand and Australia. When I came home, I worked in a Montessori as a Childcare Assistant for a year and then I did a one-year Masters in Pharmacology, partially in Brazil. When that was finished, I realised that research in a lab setting wasn’t for me, so I considered Computer Science and found an intensive course in UCD for a year. My route into IT was definitely a long winded one!
Why Version 1?
The reason why I applied for Version 1 was because of the opportunities that were there. I love challenges and learning new things. I must confess; the test fest was one thing that really appealed to me. I loved the fact that Version 1 supports certification and want their employees to get certified, providing them with all the necessary training and materials required. I guess I’m just a big nerd really.
Does your role challenge you?
I'm currently working as a SharePoint Developer. I’m involved in a project for an International Retailer and have a lot of tasks and mini projects to complete in each sprint; so I’m gaining a lot of experience as the days go on and it has really helped me develop both personally and in my career. I realise that I do well with deadlines and pressure. Once I have work to do or given a clear direction of what I need to do, I am good to go!
I think my role is quite difficult for someone who has less than a years’ experience in the industry, especially when there was no training for my job and I was pretty much thrown into the deep end. You really need to be smart and think creatively. It’s not just a copy and paste job and you need to be able to understand, adapt and be self-motivated to learn the skills that you may lack.
