Shane joined 18 months ago as a Cloud Associate. See how his role has evolved since joining and the advice that he would give to anyone thinking of applying to Version 1.
How has your role developed since you first started?
Since joining Version 1 I have worked on the Enterprise Cloud team. My role has been quite varied since I started, doing anything and everything related to Cloud. In the last year I feel like I have learned a lot and become a real contributor to my team. I have started to get hands-on experience with AWS customers involving support and project work. This really complements all the study I did last year.
What's the best thing about working in Version 1? What has been your greatest challenge to date?
I really enjoy working in both my team and in Version 1. Firstly, the Enterprise Cloud team is small, which means we all work closely together, and as a result I've learned so much from the rest of the team. Secondly, my team interacts with people from all sides of Version 1 which is really interesting, I get visibility into all the cool projects happening in cloud across the business.
I think Version 1 is great place to start a career in IT. After college and traveling, I knew I wanted to work in the IT industry, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Since starting here I have learned so much about Cloud and I'm sure that this is the right space for me.
What have you learned about yourself during your time here in Version 1?
I have learned that I am very adaptable. No two days are the same in my life here. Within a day I can be working on a number of projects across marketing, sales, support and development. It's not always easy to juggle, particularly when going from design work to more technical stuff but I've learned that I can do it.
Do you regularly see the company’s Core Values in action? Is the title of a Great Place to Work deserved?
The Core Values are very important here and I do see them around me. The most evident to me is Personal Commitment. Everyone around me is committed to what they do, if they sign up for something they see it through. An example of this is when Version 1 recently achieved the AWS Migration Competency - a team including my manager Karen had been working on this (as a side project) since before I joined, finally the hard work paid off last month.
Definitely a great place to work! There is a fantastic work/social balance, everyone works hard and then there are lots of opportunities to relax. The Summer BBQ took place last week which was lots of fun, last year I took part in a number of charity runs that Version 1 sponsored and every Wednesday I play football with lads from work.
