What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a global network of interconnected machines and devices interacting with each other. IoT enables machine-to-machine communication (M2M), which has been regarded as so revolutionary that the IoT is considered the main technology at the core of Industry 4.0. Provided with identifying, networking, sensing and processing capabilities, everyday objects can communicate with other devices and services over the internet to achieve a defined goal.
How does the Internet of Things work?
From electric toasters to new cars, almost all objects are produced with sensors, actuators and connectivity capabilities to integrate with the IoT. Objects “talk” to each other through a connectivity component: the Internet. Connections can include Bluetooth, WI-FI networks or new specific standards like Zigbee. Each IoT device is provided with a unique identifier (UI), enabling it to transfer data over a network.
