Social Value Programme Delivery for SEND Students at New City College

Read time: 4 mins

Introduction

New City College provides education to young adults aged 16+ from multiple campuses across Greater London. They are the fourth largest college group in the UK with campuses across Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Redbridge, Epping Forest, and Havering. They provide various courses for local school leavers, SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) students, adults, and those looking for higher education qualifications.

New City College approached Version 1 to work with their SEND students due to our growing experience delivering and adapting employability and digital skills programmes for people living with a disability. After the successful completion of our Consultancy Challenge programme by 12 of their level 2 NVQ students (GCSE equivalency), they requested Version 1 work with their SEND department to design an iteration for their transition year students.

Challenge

New City College students who have a Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) statement are required to complete employer engagement and placement activities as part of their transition to a T-Level programme.

Solution

New City College (NCC) requested a programme to be delivered for eight students with a SEND statement over four days, creating an engagement model that could be improved and reiterated with additional cohorts of students.

The Version 1 Social Value team designed a four-session programme to explore key concepts of design thinking. The sessions were delivered remotely, with a flexible schedule to ensure all participants could manage the programme alongside their core curriculum.

The sessions would support the students to:

  • improve communication and presentation skills
  • encourage creative thinking and user focussed design
  • explore the core concepts of design thinking processes
  • deliver tasks to an agreed standard and timeline

By working closely with the students and the SEND team at New City College, Version 1 were able to redesign the programme from our agreed baseline content over the course of the week to meet the target objectives.

Our unique model of programme delivery through Social Value at Version 1 ensures that our delivery team is empowered to adapt on the ground to suit the needs of our participants and partners.

Real Differences, Delivered

  • 128 people training hours delivered (16 hours x 8 participants)
  • 100% of students completed the programme
  • Students stated that they had pushed themselves to succeed in the work and were proud to have completed the programme
  • Support workers stated they were impressed with the level of the students work

“It was exciting to see the social value programme Version 1 designed on our behalf. As a Senior Project Manager in the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, it was the first time I had the opportunity to see what social value can achieve and the pride of the students at their achievement was something special to be a part of.”
