Celebrating the ‘New Core’ Launch at the University of Birmingham
Version 1 would like to congratulate the University of Birmingham on the successful ‘big bang’ go-live of their New Core programme. New Core is an ambitious and complex business transformation programme driven by experts from across the University, and governed by the University’s Programme Board as part of its Strategic Framework 2015-2020, to completely replace its legacy platforms with a single integrated platform and transform the Finance, Planning, Grant Administration, Research, Human Capital Management and Payroll functions at the University.
The New Core solution is underpinned by Oracle ERPM & HCM Cloud, Oracle WebCenter, and Oracle Business Intelligence Applications, delivering over 250 Higher Education-specific reports and integrating with over 50 core systems, including Banner, Kinetic, Worktribe, and Gladstone, spanning across its global campus, delivering services to over 34,000 students and 8,500 staff.
Cloud Ambition
The University of Birmingham was the first UK university to state its ambition to move to Cloud, signing a contract to implement the full Oracle ERPM & HCM Cloud suite, including Core Finance and HR, Procurement, Project Management, Planning and Budgeting, Taleo Recruitment, Time and Labour, Payroll, Document Management, and Business Analytics, integrated with core campus systems using Oracle SOA Cloud Services and Microsoft Biztalk.
Long-Standing Oracle Platinum Partner
The University of Birmingham selected Version 1, an Oracle Platinum Partner with a long-standing track record in Higher Education ERP projects, and over 1300 staff specialising in complex transformation programmes across Digital and Cloud technologies, as their partner with the scale and experience to deliver this extensive Oracle ERPM & HCM footprint alongside Oracle Business Intelligence, whilst managing the complex data migration from disparate legacy systems, the integration of the new systems to over 50 line of business systems across the campus, and the expertise to support the University-wide change management initiatives necessary to ensure a successful adoption of the new systems.
Multi-Year Digital Transformation Programme
This multi-year digital transformation programme has created a new core of fully integrated systems, central to which is Oracle ERPM & HCM Cloud and Oracle Business Intelligence, providing a keystone of core systems to support the ongoing delivery of the University’s ambitious “Birmingham 2026” plan. Version 1 is extremely proud to have been working in partnership with the dedicated University team, led by Charlotte Wellington and Kate Williams, to help them to realise their digital vision, redefining their core business processes and building a fully integrated cloud-based solution which delivers self service, standardisation and process efficiencies across Finance and HR, a modern user experience and accurate and up to date information from a single source available in real time, freeing up time for analytical processes and personal interactions which add value, whilst meeting the growing requirements of external regulation.

Having fully decommissioned their legacy ERP, HR and Payroll platforms, we are confident that the University of Birmingham have set a new benchmark in the adoption of ERPM & HCM Cloud technology in support of their end-to-end business processes, and they have clearly demonstrated how it can be successfully integrated across a complex multi technology landscape – the entire Version 1 and University of Birmingham team, supported by our colleagues in Oracle Debbie Green, Joan Fennelly, Geoff Carss, John Cafolla, Sandy Boyd, Liam Nolan and Vinon Menon deserve great credit for delivering this vision.
