Trusted data foundations: turning AI ambition into reality
Today’s data landscape is a challenging one – on one hand, organisations have never had so much access to so much data, or so many tools and techniques to process it, or more senior leadership publicly committed to becoming ‘data-driven’. And yet, it has become increasingly clear that, by most measures, trust in that data has never been lower. Welcome to 2026.
This is not a pessimistic view of the data world, it’s an honest one. The gap between organisation’s data ambition and data reality is wide, and understanding where that gap is, is the first step towards closing it. So, what’s actually happening?
AI-readiness: the reckoning
The big story in data this year is one of self-examination. After two years of generative AI pilots, boardrooms are asking: why are none of these things in production?
The key issue – as has been the case for us data folk for some time – is data quality and fragmentation, but the advent of mainstream AI usage has suddenly focussed a spotlight on this. Businesses are dealing with data trapped in silos, frequently lacking the structure, metadata, guardrails, and governance that AI tools need to use it effectively.
Put simply: many organisations have rushed to build on top of a foundation that wasn’t yet ready.
There has been an assumption that AI would automatically clean up their data and immediately transform it into useful insights. The reality, is that the old principle of ‘rubbish in rubbish out’ still holds true, and much of their data is not ready for use or fit for purpose.
This is not a technology failure. It is a fundamentals failure. And the good news is that it is entirely fixable, provided organisations are willing to do the less glamorous work of data quality and governance, before reaching for the AI toolkit.
Governance: the gap
Data governance has long been treated as the boring bit of enterprise strategy: everyone agrees it is important, very few actually want to deal with it. In 2026, that attitude is becoming expensive.
Some numbers to back that up: Dataversity report that 61% of organisations list data quality as a top challenge, yet only 15% report having mature data governance in place. Meanwhile, Gartner predicts that through 2026, organisations will abandon 60% of AI projects due to insufficient data quality.
Compounding this is the regulatory environment. The EU AI Act comes into full effect this year, on 2nd August 2026, with non-compliance fines of up to 35 million euros or 7% of global revenue. Fragmented regulations are expected to cover 50% of world economies by 2027, driving a staggering estimated five billion dollars in regulatory compliance costs (BISI, 2026).
The organisations that have quietly been building governance infrastructure for the past few years are ahead of the field. The ones that deferred it are beginning to fall behind.
Agentic AI: production readiness
Agentic AI was perhaps the most hyped trend of the past year. Research from Anthropic and Carnegie Mellon found that often AI agents make too many mistakes for businesses to rely on them for any process involving significant financial stakes, reducing value-add.
Dismissing agentic AI entirely however would be a mistake. In 2026, teams are now building dedicated operational infrastructure for AI systems, and the bottleneck is no longer constructing models but operating them responsibly and confidently at scale.
The focus is shifting from experimentation to execution, which is arguably more challenging, yet brings far more value and capability.
Data Literacy: the hidden challenge
This is one of the most interesting stats I’ve seen recently: there is an odd perception gap sitting at the heart of many organisations. A Dataversity survey found that 75% of executives believe their employees are data-proficient, yet only 21% of employees feel confident working with data.
This is not a small discrepancy. It suggests that a significant portion of strategic decisions about data tools, processes, and investments are being made by people who fundamentally overestimate how ready their workforce is to use them. Closing this gap requires investment in training and cultural change.
Data Unification: zero-copy integration and hybrid cloud
A move from data centralisation to data unification is becoming clear. Zero-copy integration, where data is queried where it lives rather than duplicated across systems, is gaining genuine momentum.
On the infrastructure side, organisations are seeking more flexibility and cost control across cloud providers, with platform agnostic, hybrid-by-design strategies becoming a focus to support the drive towards real-time latency, compliance mandates, and the ever-present cost pressures.
This approach eliminates duplication costs, reduces the complexity of ELT/ETL pipelines, and avoids vendor lock-in by keeping data in open, portable formats. Gartner predicts that by 2026, 75% of new data integration flows will be created by non-technical users, which represents a significant shift in how data teams will operate.
Real Competitive Advantage
The organisations pulling ahead in 2026 are not necessarily those with the largest data estates or the most sophisticated AI platforms. The organisations that succeed will be the ones that trust and understand their data, and as a result act rapidly.
The gap most organisations are trying to close is not about having more data, but about having more reliable, usable, and trustworthy data. The fundamentals haven’t changed. They have simply become impossible to avoid.
