Version 1 Innovation Labs and Legal Ombudsman Partner on RPA Exploration

Exploring Robotic Process Automation

The Legal Ombudsman (LeO) for England and Wales is the independent and impartial body responsible for handling legal complaints received from the general public. LeO is a high-profile public body dealing with over 100,000 contacts per annum. Through competitive tender processes using government procurement frameworks, Version 1 has been awarded contracts for multiple projects that have supported and continue to support the Legal Ombudsman in playing an important role for the UK public, notably a Managed Service contract through which Version 1 stabilised and optimised a mission-critical Case Management System for LeO.

Version 1 are proud to announce that our Innovation Labs are partnering with LeO to explore how Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can make a real difference to their business, and the service they provide to consumers and lawyers. Version 1 will explore how RPA and AI can be applied to take a complaint form and convert it to a file, and perform jurisdiction checks which will enable LeO to provide a better and more efficient service to all its service users.

Harnessing the power of Automation

Robotic Process Automation is a form of business process automation which scripts and automates interactions with business systems. This innovative technology is best suited to processes that have clear and straightforward rules. Advanced forms of RPA use Artificial Intelligence, to enable scripting of processes with more complicated rules, or which require interpretation or intelligence. The business benefits of RPA can include:

  • Reduced costs
  • Operational efficiencies
  • Enable staff to focus on other, less robotic tasks.
  • Improved employee engagement
  • Easy integration with existing IT systems
  • Reduced risk of data breaches
  • Clear, codified rules of how to employ business processes

Version 1 Innovation Labs will develop a Proof of Value to demonstrate how incoming complaint forms and materials could be automatically handled and input into Legal Ombudsman’s systems.

About Legal Ombudsman

The Legal Ombudsman was formed in October 2010, under the Legal Services Act 2007 and is appointed by the Office for Legal Complaints to run an independent scheme that resolves complaints about lawyers in a fair and effective way, helping to drive improvements to legal services.
